The Sacramento Region Community Foundation has been the trusted steward of charitable assets, a community catalyst for meaningful change and the advocate for shaping vital impact through philanthropy since 1983. As the center of philanthropy in the Sacramento Region, the Foundation’s mission is to transform our community through focused leadership and advocacy that inspire partnerships and expand giving.

In late 2014, after a series of listening and learning sessions with key members and leaders of the community, the Sacramento Region Community Foundation developed “Connecting the Regional Food Economy” as one of its four new strategic initiatives. In early 2015, the Foundation funded Valley Vision, a regional nonprofit social enterprise with expertise and broad networks in the regional food system, to partner in preparing the first Sacramento Region Food System Action Plan.

The Foundation’s approach is to affect positive impact by focusing on the underlying causes of issues and seeking long-term solutions with lasting results. In the food system this means we must deal with the disconnect between the great abundance of our food and ag economy and the reality that many in our communities suffer from chronic hunger and limited access to fresh, locally-grown healthy foods. The Foundation’s goal is to “identify and create upstream changes that will be required in order to ensure that everyone can benefit from a healthy and thriving regional food system with access for all.

Since 1994 Valley Vision has strengthened communities through research, collaboration and leadership. We are a social enterprise focused on economic, environmental and social issues. Our purpose is to make our communities the most livable in the country.

Valley Vision has deep experience working in the food and agriculture sector. Our projects span the food system, from supporting the viability of agriculture in the region to addressing food insecurity. Earlier this year, Valley Vision served as one of four co-applicants leading the 28-county Central Valley AgPlus Food and Beverage Manufacturing Consortium in a successful application for designation as a federal Investing in Manufacturing Communities Partnership (IMCP) area. Valley Vision is leading Next Economy’s focus on the food and ag cluster. Previously we facilitated the Sacramento Region Food System Collaborative for over five years, and currently are working with local school districts to provide healthier food to students and the hospital systems to increase procurement of local, fresh foods.
